Now that summer is here, you’re probably wondering: What am I going to do with my kids? It’s a question every parent asks themselves this time of the year. We wanted to give you some ideas of different activities you can take advantage of right here in the Hudson Valley!
1. Visit a Water Park
Cool down this summer with a trip to a water park! The Hudson Valley is home to two different water parks, Zoom Flume Water Park in the Catskills, and Splashdown Beach in Fishkill. Both parks offer a variety of fun water activities and water slides for the whole family!
Deal time – You can save $6 off admission to Zoom Flume when tickets are purchased at Price Chopper, or make it an afternoon excursion, visit Splashdown Beach after 3 PM for a discounted rate!
2. Take a Stroll
Take a walk over the beautiful Walkway over the Hudson and enjoy amazing views of the Hudson River. Parking is available in both Highland and Poughkeepsie, on both ends of the walkway, free of charge. Not a fan of heights? Take advantage of the many Rail Trails in the area such as the Hudson Valley Rail Trail, the Wallkill/Walden Rail Trail or the Gardiner/New Paltz Rail Trail.
3. Have a Picnic
Instead of sitting inside at the table, pack a lunch for the whole family, grab a blanket, and head outside! Enjoy the warm, summer weather, whether it is in your backyard or at one of the many parks in the Hudson Valley.
4. Go kayaking or canoeing
Take advantage of the Hudson River. Rent kayaks or canoes for the family at locations such as A Day Away Kayak Rentals in Kingston and enjoy a day out on the water! Tandem or single kayaks and canoes range from $20-35 for the first hour (additional hours after range from $10-20).
5. Catch a movie at the Drive-In
Warm summer nights are a perfect opportunity to enjoy a drive-in movie. Pack the family into the car and head to one of the many drive-in theaters in the Hudson Valley such as Fair Oaks Drive-in, Warwick Drive-in, and Overlook Drive-in in Poughkeepsie to enjoy family movie night that’s a little different than normal. At around $6 for a kid’s ticket, it’s more affordable and a different experience than a regular movie theater.
6. Explore the History of the Hudson Valley
There is so much history right in our back yard in the Hudson Valley. Take a trip back in time and visit the area’s historical landmarks such as the home of Franklin D. Roosevelt or Vanderbilt Mansion in Hyde Park, George Washington’s Headquarters in Newburgh!
7. Go to the fair
Not many things say summer time like the fair. We have so many in our area to explore. Events like the Ulster County Fair, Orange County Fair, Dutchess County Fair, and the Renaissance Festival occur throughout the summer to give you plenty of opportunities to ride your favorite rides, enjoy great food, and win prizes at your favorite fair games.
8. Go swimming
Who needs a swimming pool when you have so many local options in the Hudson Valley? Take a trip to Minnewaska State Park or Bear Mountain State Park to cool down in fresh water. Not a fan of fresh water swimming? Take advantage of local pools such as the Ulster County Pool in New Paltz, The Central Valley Pool, and more!
9. Go Golfing/Mini-Golfing
Create a little friendly competition and take your kids for a round of mini golf. With many options in the Hudson Valley such as the Castle Fun Center in Chester, Lakeside Licks Mini Golf in Highland, and more. If your kids want more of a challenge and want to hit the actual golf course, there are plenty of public courses for them to learn at such as Winding Hills in Montgomery, Apple Greens in Highland, or Turtle Creek Golf Course at the Garden Cathay in Plattekill.Â
10. Open a Savings Account
